Ebola outbreak in Eastern Congo now the world's second biggest in history

The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo is now the world's second-biggest ever with 426 cases, according to the country's health ministry. On Wednesday health workers launched a door-to-door, four-day blitz to control malaria in the Democratic Republic of Congo with the aim of cutting suspected Ebola cases in half. The town of Beni in North Kivu province, currently battling the worst Ebola outbreak in Congo's history, has also seen an eight-fold increase in malaria cases since last year. Children who went to health centers for malaria are believed to have contracted Ebola there, and about half of the people screened in Ebola centers only had malaria, said the WHO. If malaria is reduced, health workers will be able to focus on real Ebola patients and keep others away from the wards. Ebola has killed 240 people and infected more than 400 since July in an outbreak that shows little sign of abating. It is spread through contact with bodily fluids and symptoms include v

Google keeps failing to understand tablets

What is a tablet? What is a tablet supposed to be and do? Nine years ago, these questions were foremost in debates about new technology, as Apple was preparing to introduce its first iPad and rival companies were rushing to beat it to the punch. CES 2010 gave us one answer in the form of the 8.9-inch HP Slate, a Windows 7 PC running on an Intel Atom processor. A few weeks later, Apple’s iPad made its debut with a 9.7-inch screen and mobile chips and software. And then a year after that, Google released a version of Android called Honeycomb that was tailored specifically for tablets. No one understood tablets back then; everyone was guessing. Apple originally envisioned the iPad as the glossy magazine equivalent of Amazon’s Kindle. The iPad would be more interactive, it would have apps, but a major part of its appeal was supposed to come from “digital magazines” and comic books created for the platform. Publishers quickly found that idea too costly to sustain, and Apple discov

Motorola is putting huge battery in a new Moto G7 Power variant

It̢۪s been a week of leaks for the upcoming Moto G7 line, and new details of an unannounced G7 Power variant emerged today through an FCC filing, as first spotted by XDA Developers. The Moto G7 Power joins the Moto G7, G7 Plus, and the recently leaked Moto G7 Play as one of the four Moto G devices that will likely launch next year. The Power̢۪s standout feature will clearly be its battery: in the filing, Motorola discloses that it will have a 5,000mAh capacity. That could also explain why this year, the Moto G Play model will have a much smaller battery than usual, as the Power seems to be stepping in to fill that role. For comparison, our review of the Moto G6 Play found that its 4,000mAh battery was able to last around three days with moderate use. The Moto G7 Power may not actually be that powerful, though. There are rumors from XDA Developers that the phone will have lower specs than the standard G7. The G7 Power might run on a Snapdragon 632 processor like the lower-end G7

YouTube Premium is changing because it has to

YouTube is gearing up to offer its prestige lineup of original series and films for free to all users, turning to its traditional ad-supported system in an attempt to bring in more viewers. The company is looking to pull back on its ad-supported programs by 2020, limiting the number of original series and films it orders, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Series that are ordered, which include a few with Hollywood star talent attached, will be available to all YouTube users for free, regardless of whether they’ve signed up for YouTube Premium. In the past, pilot episodes were free to watch, but users had to pay a monthly $12 fee to watch the entire series. Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s chief business officer, told The Hollywood Reporter that the company learned through experimentation that “a lot of the projects work incredibly well” when they’re made available for free through ad-supported networks. It’s a different approach than what YouTube’s team originally wanted to

Netflix cancels Daredevil after three seasons

Netflix and Marvel TV’s Daredevil will officially end after the third season, according to a statement from the streaming service, which was first reported by Deadline. “We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note,” the company said in a statement. “We’re thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and an incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. Netflix’s statement also noted that although there won’t be any new Daredevil episodes, all three seasons will continue to live on the platform. Netflix also noted, “the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.” Daredevil marks the third show that Netflix and Marvel have canceled; Iron Fist and Luke Cage also ended this year. Jessica Jones and The Punisher are the

Oppo share more info about a possible foldable phone

The foldable phones are coming, and it seems Chinese handset maker Oppo is the latest to join the fray. On a tour of the company’s headquarters, Oppo told multiple news sites it would have more to share on this topic at Mobile World Congress next February. According to AndroidWorld.nl, product manager Chuck Wang said: “We know Samsung and Sony are working on a foldable phone, you can also expect more news from Oppo on that topic, maybe at MWC.” It’s not clear what exactly Wang meant by this, but we do know Oppo is interested in foldable phones. The company has patented a number of foldable designs over recent years, including a device that folds outwards twice to triple in size. One news site, Tweakers, interpreted Wang as meaning that Oppo will have a foldable device to show off at MWC, but it’s not clear if this is the case. We’ve reached out to Oppo for more details and will update this story if we hear more. If the company is readying a foldable device, it will jo

Knickers the extremely large cow is not actually a cow

Yesterday, the world was introduced to Knickers, an extremely large Australian bovine. The steer was a sight out there in the field, towering benevolently over his smaller female peers. (No, Knickers is not a cow. Cows are female cattle who have had a calf; a steer is a neutered male.) The very big boy is a Holstein Friesian, a breed that originated in North Holland and Northern Germany that humans have been breeding for dairy production over the last 2,000 years. He lives on cattle farmer Geoff Pearson’s property in Western Australia. According to The Guardian, Knickers stands 6 feet, 4 inches from hoof to shoulder â€" that means he’s only three inches shorter than a Mewtwo â€" and he weighs approximately 1.5 tons or a little more than a Toyota Corolla. While Knickers’ size is certainly his most obvious characteristic, it isn’t really the most salient. “I am not sure he is so much a freak as just a tall Holstein,” Alison Van Eenennaam, a professor at UC Davis

Osmo Pocket is a tiny handheld gimbal that shoots 4K footage

DJI’s newest product, the Osmo Pocket, is the smallest handheld stabilizer the drone/camera company has made. It takes a bunch of things the Chinese company has done really well and puts them into an impressively small form factor. It’s meant to offer drone-like footage in a size that is comparable to a GoPro (even if it can’t take the same kinds of wear and tear). The Osmo Pocket costs $349 and ships December 15th. The Osmo Pocket stands just four inches tall and weighs barely over four ounces (116g). When you turn it off, the gimbal tilts the camera on end so that the whole system can fit into a small case, which then easily slides into a pocket â€" hence the name. Instead of using the large Zenmuse camera found on the original Osmo or a smartphone as the camera like with the Osmo Mobile, the Pocket borrows more from the camera and gimbal tech found on the company’s smaller drones, like the Mavic Air. The camera that sits on the three-axis gimbal uses a 1/2.3-inch

Project Fi is now Google Fi

Three years after it first launched, Google is making its cell service a little more official today. Project Fi is graduating into something a little more ambitious and getting a new name in the process: Google Fi. But the bigger news is that it’s also going to support more phones â€" a lot of phones â€" including the iPhone and “the majority of Android devices.” This isn’t the first time that Fi has worked with Apple devices; you could get a data-only SIM for iPads as secondary devices before. And technically, a Fi SIM has always worked in an iPhone, provided you adjust the data settings on the phone. But now Google is supporting iPhones directly for new customers, though it says that the support is in beta and requires “a few extra steps to get set up.” There will be a new Google Fi iOS app to help ease the process along. More specifically, you'll find that Visual Voicemail won’t work anymore, but iMessage will. iOS won’t pull the right MMS and data

SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg

Although SpongeBob SquarePants has been airing more or less consistently for nearly 20 years, the show’s first three seasons â€" which aired between 1999 and 2004 â€" were it is most influential. Those 60 episodes were the only ones personally overseen by creator Stephen Hillenburg, who died yesterday from ALS. They aired during a critical period for today’s 20-something adults. We were young enough to be engrossed with the show’s silly, absurd characters, returning home after school to watch an episode of SpongeBob that played on Nickelodeon. I was seven when SpongeBob first aired, and I recall those early seasons vividly. It was also a time when that same generation was just starting to go online, eventually making the internet what it is today. Almost two decades later, people who grew up watching SpongeBob are the same people who are making memes â€" which is why, of course, there have been so many SpongeBob memes over the years. From Winded SpongeBob to Mena

MIT researchers create plane that flies without any moving parts

Researchers at MIT have developed a plane capable of flying without any moving parts, reports MIT Technology Review. The feat was achieved using electro-aerodynamic propulsion, which uses a pair of electrodes to push around ions and create ionic wind. The phenomenon has been known about since the 1960s (in fact, Apple even considered using it to cool its laptops back in 2012), but this is the first time it’s been used to propel a plane. That said, this ‘plane’ is an uncrewed model weighing just 2.45 kilograms. Scaling it up to the size of commercial aircraft would give it numerous safety, noise levels, maintenance, and environmental benefits over traditional planes, but doing so comes with enormous challenges. For one, the battery required to supply the necessary 40,000 volts the propulsion system requires would be massive, creating huge weight challenges that the design would need to overcome. Instead of entirely powering a passenger plane, the researchers speculate that the

Facebook confirms years-old messages are coming back to haunt users

Facebook users are reporting one of the stranger bugs to plague the platform of late: years-old Messenger threads resurfacing automatically, without context or explanation. First reported by users on Twitter, the company now confirms that older messages are being treated as new, unread ones and popping up in the Messenger tab on Facebook.com. The explanation, however, remains elusive. “Some people are seeing older messages on Facebook.com. We are aware of the issue and are actively working to resolve it in as soon as possible,” a Facebook spokesperson tells The Verge. “We apologize for the inconvenience.” Some have expressed concern that the bug could resurface conversations or past histories they would much rather forget. Unless you actively delete the history between you and another user, Messenger retains the entirety of your back-and-forth conversations, stretching back years. It could be jarring to some to be hit with an old thread with an ex or a family member or frie

The legal framework around gene-editing babies

A Chinese researcher claims to have created the world’s first gene-edited babies, a move bioethicists say is the latest example of how gene-editing technology is advancing faster than regulation. If true, this experiment could have worldwide effects â€" and there’s no law that prevents it from happening in the US or anywhere else. It’s still unclear whether researcher He Jiankui truly used a powerful gene-editing tool called CRISPR as-9 to enhance the ability of twin girls (“Lulu” and “Nana”) to resist HIV. Nobody has independently verified any data and nothing has been published in a journal. Still, Jiankui’s alleged actions have already been widely denounced. “There were inadequate regulation and no serious oversight,” says Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at New York University. “It’s ethically Swiss cheese, more holes than substance.” Especially egregious, he adds, is that the alleged editing was not to repair or fix a mutated gene (that is, fix a genet

Apple resumes iPhone X production in face of weak XS sales

Apple has resumed production of the iPhone X due to weaker than expected demand for its latest XS and XS Max models, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The move is allegedly due to an agreement made with Samsung to purchase a certain quantity of OLED screens. With this year̢۪s OLED-equipped models failing to sell in the quantities needed to fulfill the terms of the deal, the report suggests that Apple is turning to last year̢۪s model for a solution. Apple ceased selling the iPhone X in stores when the XS was first released. The iPhone X is thought to be cheaper to produce than the XS or XS Max thanks to its age, which means components and manufacturing equipment is cheaper, according to the WSJ report. In the past, legacy models have been produced when there̢۪s enough demand for them in certain markets. The news comes amidst reports that Apple has cut production orders for all three of its new models of iPhone due to lower than expected demand. The cheaper iPhone

Google settled with a contractor after complaints of racial profiling

Google settled a racial discrimination claim brought by a contractor who says that the company failed to adequately protect him from being “treated as a terror suspect,” while on the job for Google Maps, reports The Guardian. The Guardian says that Google retracted a contract offered to Ahmed Rashid (an alias) after he complained about being racially harassed on the job. Rashid, whom the paper identifies as a UK citizen of Moroccan descent, told the paper that he worked as a third-party contractor to “surreptitiously gather information about the strength and range of wifi signals inside individual stores in the targeted shopping centers,” which would allow users to use Google Maps with greater accuracy via WiFi signal, rather than GPS. Rashid explained to the paper that he and his team would walk around designated stores for a set amount of time, while apps on their phones collected information. He says that they were not permitted to identify themselves to store employees

Bitcoin has lost 40 percent of its value in the last two weeks

Bitcoin is in the middle of an astounding price drop, reaching prices as low as $3,520 in recent days and wiping out all gains from coins purchased this year. As of press time, the price was hovering around $3,900, a roughly 40 percent drop from two weeks ago. The result is the worst price drop since April 2013, refreshing old doubts about the soundness of bitcoin as an investment vehicle. It̢۪s a dramatic turn from 2017 when the value passed $15,000 at the beginning of December to peak just below $20,000. After that, prices plummeted. By January of this year, it lost half of its peak value and continued to drop. The drop has been particularly dramatic in the last couple of weeks. The price drop is likely the result of a series of forks this year, which produced parallel currencies like Bitcoin Cash. A planned fork of Bitcoin Cash took place on November 15th and was accompanied by considerable angst from traders ahead of time. CoinDesk notes that Bitcoin Cash and several other bit

The worlds most versatile waterproof backpack

The Siletz Modular Carry System from Tillak is pitched on Kickstarter as “the world’s most versatile waterproof backpack.” It’s a bag designed for anyone who needs to take their computing or camera gear into parts unknown, be it a backcountry Alpine slope, a flat water lagoon, or an unexpected L train detour on the daily office commute. The Siletz system starts with a waterproof 35-liter rolltop backpack. From there, you can add the Laptop Sleeve, the Travel/Photo Insert, and a Night Bag to create the Work & Travel system. The Outdoor System is compromised of a Gear Pouch, Shoulder Pouch, Cooler Insert, and 25-liter Wet/Dry Insert. The complete system with all the accessories is priced at an eye-watering $395 for Kickstarter backers, while the core kit containing just the backpack and laptop sleeve is $165 with early-adopter pricing. Modular backpacks like the Siletz come with a do-it-all promise that’s rarely ever kept. That’s because a bag that looks and performs

The remake of the 1994 classic The Lion King of Disney

Disney’s remake of 1994 classic The Lion King just got its very first trailer, in the form of a quick minute and a half teaser aired during the NFL’s traditional Thanksgiving primetime game. The film, produced by Walt Disney Pictures and helmed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau, is a photorealistic, computer-animated movie featuring a staggering number of high-profile voice actors, including Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, and James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa. Hans Zimmer is also returning to score the film, while Elton John is coming back to rework some of his original compositions. In the trailer, we can see what look like the opening moments of the movie, in which Rafiki presents a young Simba to the animals of the Pride Lands, with the quintessential shot of Simba being hoisted above the rock. All the while, James Earl Jones’ narration as Mufasa plays while the original film’s opening track, “Circle of Life,” can be heard in the background. The

Facebook and Google should face boycott over terrorist content

MPs are suggesting that advertisers boycott tech companies like Facebook and Google until they do more to tackle terrorism. Social media companies and image hosting firms have been under considerable pressure to remove content from their sites. YouTube was criticized for videos that gave instructions about how to make a bomb from ingredients bought on Amazon. Dominic Grieve, chairman of the intelligence committee, described it as a "matter of scandal" and urged businesses to put pressure on communications service providers in order to cut profits for Facebook, Google and others. The Conservative party, of which Grieve is a member, spent a reported £2.1 million on Facebook ads in the run-up to the 2017 general election. Tech companies have acknowledged that more needs to be done. In 2017 Google announced it would hire 10,000 staff to monitor YouTube for unsuitable content. Technology itself can help with this too, with YouTube claiming automated tools are able to fl

What is the Arecibo message

Today's Google Doodle marks 44 years since the Arecibo message was beamed into outer space. The Arecibo message was a signal sent in 1974 from the Arecibo Observatory's radio telescope. Designed as a celebration of the facility's remodeling it communicated a message about humanity to a distant cluster of stars. Sent from Arecibo's megawatt transmitter and 305-meter antenna it was possible to concentrate a signal on a very small point in the sky. The power of the signal was the equivalent of a 20 trillion watt broadcast, according to SETI. The message was tiny by modern standards. It contained only 210 bytes made up of 1,679 binary digits. Essentially zeros and ones being beamed into space using frequency modulation. The transmission lasted less than three minutes in total. At the power level used it should be possible for the signal to be detected anywhere in the galaxy - assuming equipment similar to the telescope at Arecibo. What was in the Arecibo messag

Secret to being more LIKABLE on a first date

A first date can be a daunting experience, but thankfully, it seems that there̢۪s a fairly easy way to make sure you impress your date. A new study has revealed that daters make a better impression when they concentrate on communicating the effort behind their successes, rather than just emphasizing their talent. Researchers from Cass Business School investigated how people attribute their success on first dates and job interviews. Contrary to popular belief, the researchers found that success alone isn̢۪t enough to make a good impression. Instead, hearing about the struggle behind someone̢۪s success makes them appear more likable. In the study, the researchers carried out three experiments - two that emulated a job interview, and one that emulated the first date. Participants were asked to imagine themselves as either the interviewee/sharer on a date or the interviewer/listener on a date. The interviewee/sharer on a date was asked to speak about themselves in a posit

iPhones are for Poor While The Rich Go For Huawei

It’s a common perception that iPhone users are rich people. However, this recent survey pointed out that most iPhone users are actually not! A China-based survey company called MobData recently published their report, which compiled the information of smartphone users in China. What caught our attention was the fact that iPhone users in China mostly consist of lower-middle-class people who are described as ‘poor people in disguise’. Which is why it’s not surprising that many Apple users are still rocking the iPhone 6, which debuted in 2014. They are mostly single women aged between 18 and 34 who earn less than 3,000 Yuan (approx. RM1,800). Also, they have a lower education level compared to users of other brands and work as non-professionals. Besides, the survey also revealed that Apple users are much more loyal compared to users of other brands. In fact, 65.7 percent of its users will stick to the brand if they need to get a new phone. As for Huawei, the majority of its us

High cholesterol causes and symptoms

Many people are completely unaware that they have high cholesterol, which is why it’s known as the silent killer. “There are no symptoms of high cholesterol,” says Dr. Dermot Neely, who runs a specialist lipid clinic in Newcastle upon Tyne. “The only real symptom is a blocked artery, which causes a stroke or heart attack. In severe cases, you can get cholesterol deposits in the tendons or around the clear part of the eye, but a doctor would rarely notice these during an examination.” So what is it? Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 38% of male and 37% of female deaths before the age of 75, with high cholesterol a serious risk factor. But it’s not all bad. “We all have cholesterol in the blood, and we all need it to be a healthy human,” says Dr. Neely. “It’s a fatty substance carried in the blood attached to proteins called lipoproteins and is mainly made by the liver, with only about a fifth coming from food. We need it to make hormones, vit

Jamal Khashoggi - Saudi Crown Prince

The CIA has uncovered a recording of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman giving instructions to "silence Jamal Khashoggi as soon as possible," according to Turkey's Hurriyet Daily News. Khashoggi is said to have been strangled before his body was cut up and dissolved in acid after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. Saudi Arabia has claimed that his death was the result of a fight, but Turkish authorities believe that he was tortured and dismembered. The news outlet cited a prominent Turkish columnist as saying CIA director Gina Haspel had "signaled" the existence of the recording during a visit to Ankara last month. The Crown Prince and his brother Khaled - Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the US - are reportedly heard discussing the "discomfort" created by Khashoggi's public criticism of the kingdom's administration. Khashoggi, who wrote for The Washington Post, was a vocal critic of Prince Mohammed. It comes

Marshall Kilburn II review

If you̢۪re a fan of Rock ̢۪n̢۪ Roll and in the market for a new portable speaker, Marshall may have just answered your prayers. The firm has launched its Kilburn II speaker - a wireless Bluetooth speaker that strongly resembles an amp. As the name suggests, the Kilburn II is a follow-up to the Kilburn speaker, which was released in 2015. With over 20 hours of playtime and water-resistance, the speaker has many impressive features, as well as a stunning retro design. I got my hands on the new Kilburn II speaker - here are my thoughts. Design The Kilburn II is one for the best looking Bluetooth speakers I̢۪ve seen. It features a solid metal grille that resembles the mesh grille seen on microphones and amps and instantly gives it that Rock ̢۪n̢۪ Roll vibe. Adding to this vibe is the leather carrying strap, which features a plush red velvet lining, giving it a luxurious feel. Sound quality Measuring just 243 x 162 x 140 mm, the speaker is fairly compact - but that̢۪s not

Google Pixel 3 review

Design Admittedly, the designs of both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are slightly underwhelming. The phones both have a two-tone design on the back of the device, with a matte bottom section contrasted with a high-shine top section. While this does make the phone feel very smooth in the hand, it looks quite clumsy compared to the all-glass designs seen in many rival smartphones. Camera While I was initially concerned to hear that the smartphones both only have single-lens rear cameras, I was happily surprised to find that this didn̢۪t affect photo quality whatsoever. The cameras cope well in a range of conditions, including when shooting in the dark, thanks to the Night Sight mode. My favorite camera feature was the Top Shot option, which automatically detects the best shot from a burst set. ̢۬As someone who always seems to the one blinking in photos, this was a welcome addition! Dual-lens front cameras are also a fun feature, and the super-wide-angle lens could be perfect if

5G technology is predicted to DOUBLE Internet speeds

5G home broadband will double internet speeds at half the cost, according to a new study commissioned by Three UK. The report from Ovum reveals that the new technology is predicted to deliver speeds of up to 100 Mbps. This is on average double what UK customers currently get with fixed broadband. The report also suggests that this increased speed will come at half the cost, saving the average customer £240/year. And the days of having to wait for your broadband to be set up could be a thing of the past with 5G, which will operate as a ‘plug and play’ set up. Dave Dyson, CEO at Three UK, said: “5G gives our customers the opportunity to bin their fixed line, enjoy faster speeds and save money. “The efficient and widespread rollout of superfast broadband across households and businesses is crucial to the growth of our economy.” Three UK aims to launch a 5G wireless home broadband service in the second half of 2019. https://adstoppi.com/blog/5g-technology-is-predicted-t

Since Switzerland banks freeze tens of thousands of bank account held by foreigners before tax disclosure regulations that are impending or shut down, their compliance officials face a learning curve that is challenging. After over 80 years of the secret bank accounts which made the nation the worlds most famous tax haven, the private banking industry should now adopt a new era of transparency under pressure mostly from the OECD automatic exchange of data and Americas Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. Banking And Financial Services

Nevertheless, innovations like securitization, which led during the prime debacle in America to the crisis, pose a present danger to the industry. Managers and regulators everywhere, as guardians of the world system's elements, do not clearly comprehend the consequences of innovation. This is particularly the case in the applications of technology in the supply of services. This definition is extended by financial invention into the world. Here the simplicity ends with plenty of procedures, products, and methods which were implemented to the world's spectrum - a few goods and a few bad. What drives innovation?
