Sony has warned that PlayStation consoles will become more expensive if the Trump administration goes ahead with higher tariffs on more Chinese exports, the WSJ reports. LG reported that sales from its smartphone division declined by 21 percent compared to the same quarter the previous year, while Sony’s dropped by almost 30 percent. Created by Paul Klinger, the ThinkTiny uses the laptop’s iconic red TrackPoint nub as a joystick for classic arcade games like Snake, Tetris, and Lunar Lander. The tiny laptop runs on an ATtiny1614 microcontroller and features a 128 x 64 OLED screen. It’s all housed in a 3D-printed case that’s complete with a glowing “Think” logo. Sadly, the ThinkTiny cannot run Doom or Crysis, but there is a neat little Mandelbrot fractal explorer. Gizmodo says Klinger doesn’t plan to sell the ThinkTiny, which is understandable considering the toy’s production time, not to mention the fact that it could incur some tiny lawsuits from Lenovo. But if you want to try to make it yourself, Klinger has generously posted the entire code and design files on his GitHub page.

Just over a year after its official launch, the Data Transfer Project is announcing a new set of partners and features. Today, Apple announced that it will be joining the project, developing interoperable systems to bring data in and out of iCloud. A number of alternative social networks have also joined the project, with Tim Berners-Lee’s Solid project enabling the import and export of contacts, and Mastodon allowing for the import and export of posts. An open-source project aimed at making it easier to transfer data from one service to another, the Data Transfer Project has mostly consisted of back-end coding to make data export tools like Google Takeout and Facebook’s Access Your Information tool compatible with each other. Right now, those tools let you download data directly to your hard drive, but the hope is that the project’s code could allow the data to be ported directly to another service. The Apple Card will come in both a digital and a physical, titanium card form. However, the Apple Card won’t use a traditional 16-digit card number, CVV code, or expiration date as a personal identifier. Instead, it will generate those numbers randomly during each transaction to keep purchases secure. It looks like they’re serious about that: France’s Minister of Defense announced a program that would develop nano satellites equipped with guns and lasers, according to Le Point (via Task & Purpose). Minister Florence Parly announced that the country would be reallocating €700 million from the military budget for space defense, with more than €4.3 billion to be spent by 2025. That money would go towards upgrading France’s network of Syracuse military communications satellites, which are operated by the French Navy. The chips include an octa-core CPU clocked at up to 2.05GHz, which uses the same ARM Cortex-A76 and A55 cores as the latest flagship processors from Qualcomm and Huawei. MediaTek’s chip also includes a Mali G76 GPU with speeds of up to 800MHz and support for up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The G90 and G90T are the first SoCs (system on a chip) in MediaTek’s gaming-focused G-Series lineup. They include what the company calls its “HyperEngine” technology, which consists of several features that are designed to boost the performance of smartphone games. Comcast plans to launch its NBCUniversal streaming service in April next year, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke said on today’s earnings call. We previously knew the streaming service would launch next year, but the company had yet to announce anything more exact. As well as announcing a launch month, parent company Comcast also revealed that the upcoming streaming service will be built on a similar platform to Sky’s UK-based Now TV streaming service. Comcast didn’t announce too many specifics about the kinds of content we can expect from the streaming service, but we know that it will play host to The Office after NBC’s existing deal with Netflix expires at the end of 2020. However, Comcast admitted that the “vast majority” of content viewed on the platform is initially likely to be acquired from outside the company. The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee has concluded that election systems in all 50 states were targeted by hackers linked to the Russian government, according to a heavily redacted report released today. In 2017, we’d heard 39 states, and the Department of Homeland Security officially admitted that 21 states had been targeted later that year. It was only this April that a joint report from DHS and the FBI indicated that Russian hackers may have tried to probe every single U.S. state’s election infrastructure for flaws. Because the relevant sections of today’s report are mostly blacked out, it’s not clear how sure the Senate Intelligence Committee is that Russia probed every state, or what the evidence might be. But it does say that some unnamed intelligence gathered in 2018 backed up earlier assumptions by National Security Council cyber coordinator Michael Daniel, and the DHS, that every state was hacked. Spin, the dockless scooter company acquired by Ford Motor Company last year, announced on Thursday that it will deploy 15,000 scooters in eight cities starting in August. The company also unveiled its latest model of electric scooter, with anti-theft technology and custom parts meant to deter vandalism. Spin has been expanding since it was bought by Ford in November 2018, but today’s news marks a more rapid stage of growth. At the time of its acquisition, the San Francisco-based company operated rentable electric scooters in nine cities and on five college campuses. Today, that number has grown to 47 cities and campuses. Starting in August, Spin plans to deploy thousands of new scooters on the streets of Portland; Los Angeles; Denver; Washington, DC; Kansas City; Memphis; and Minneapolis, with more cities to follow. Apple will acquire “the majority” of Intel’s smartphone modem business for $1 billion, the two companies announced today. Around 2,200 Intel employees will join Apple, and Apple will acquire IP and equipment from Intel as well. The transaction is expected to close toward the end of the year. Intel won’t be getting out of the modem business entirely. It’ll still be able to develop modems for PCs, Internet of Things devices, autonomous vehicles, and seemingly anything that’s not a smartphone. Intel CEO Bob Swan said the acquisition will allow the company to focus on developing other 5G technologies. The acquisition means that Apple is now well on the way to producing its own 5G modems for its smartphones, rather than having to rely on Qualcomm for the hardware. Apple only recently resolved its long-running dispute with the chipmaker, and when it did, Intel lost no time in announcing that it would be exiting the 5G phone business as a direct result of the settlement. President Trump said in a tweet this morning that his administration will not allow Apple to avoid tariffs on Mac Pro parts, after the company requested exemptions earlier this month. As part of an ongoing trade battle with China, the Trump administration has proposed stiff tariffs on imports from China. The list of proposed goods includes electronics, potentially hitting Apple with tariff increases as high as 25 percent. Earlier this month, Apple filed requests with the Office of the US Trade Representative, asking for some parts to be excluded from the planned tariffs. While the filings did not explicitly mention the Mac Pro, Bloomberg reported last week that the descriptions in the filings matched up with parts for the desktop computer. Apple recently moved its manufacturing of the Mac Pro to China from the United States. Trump seems to have jumped ahead of a decision from the Office of the US Trade Representative, writing in a tweet that Apple will not receive any exemptions.

The details are stunning. It’s a mixture of dystopian fiction (AI surveillance cameras everywhere!) and childish imaginings (let’s build a robot dinosaur park!). Taken together, the plans remind of you what a dedicated nine-year-old can achieve in Minecraft. Yes, the scale and ambition are impressive, but it’s not like you could do this in real life, right?
