Apex Legends is a better battle royale, but I'd rather hang out in Fortnite

Even though I've been playing Fortnite for the better part of a year, I still get surprised by the butterflies. There I am, running along the edge of a giant crater or sneaking through a dense forest, and some blue, fluttering wings catch my eye. I don't exactly stop and stare â€" that's too dangerous in a battle royale where everyone is out to kill you â€" but it's enough to capture my attention for a brief second before I move on to explore other parts of the island. There's nothing similar to those charming butterflies in Apex Legends. Respawn's Titanfall-themed shooter stormed out of the gates when it launched two weeks ago, racking up 25 million players in seven days and regularly dominating the Twitch charts. Apex isn't the first battle royale game to challenge Fortnite, but none of its contemporaries have had this kind of momentum. Even neon-haired Fortnite star Ninja is playing Respawn's game, winning the game's first major tourna

Instagram is testing a donation sticker in Stories

Instagram is experimenting with a potential donation sticker for its Stories feature, as spotted by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong. The feature seems similar to what Facebook offers with its fundraising and donation tools for charity or personal reasons. Based on Wong's screenshot, it looks like users will be able to search through a list of nonprofits to link directly to the sticker. Facebook has had fundraising tools since 2015, but it only recently dropped fees associated with those donations. It also offers other payment processing tools for Marketplace and Messenger. Over the past few years, Instagram has been experimenting with what payments would look like on the platform, but it has so far only released test features to allow select users to book spa appointments and restaurant reservations. Instagram is also reportedly working on a standalone shopping app, so it isn’t out of the realm of possibility for payment functionalities to also exist on Stories. As usual, bo

Microsoft teases HoloLens 2 launch for later this month

Microsoft has started teasing what is likely to be its HoloLens 2 launch at Mobile World Congress later this month. Alex Kipman, Microsoft's technical fellow and HoloLens creator, has published a 42-second video teaser for the company's press event on February 24th. The video is very cryptic, but it does show what appears to be a processor and possibly some carbon fiber hints. Microsoft is holding its press event on February 24th at 5PM CET (11AM ET), and CEO Satya Nadella, technical fellow Alex Kipman, and CVP Julia White will all be in attendance. Microsoft has been working on its next-generation HoloLens headset for quite some time now. Codenamed Sydney, the headset is expected to include an improved field of view, and be more comfortable to wear thanks to a lighter frame. Microsoft's video teaser, which feels very similar to the original Surface RT announce video, could be showing the custom AI chip that has been built for the HoloLens 2. Microsoft's new headset

Millions in cryptocurrencies frozen after Canadian founder's death

TORONTO (Reuters) - About C$180 million ($137.21 million) in cryptocurrencies have been frozen in the user accounts of Canadian digital platform Quadriga after the founder, the only person with the password to gain access, died suddenly in December. Gerald Cotten died aged 30 from complications with Crohn's disease while volunteering at an orphanage in India, according to the Facebook page of Quadriga CX, which announced his death on January 14. The platform, which allows the trading of Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum, filed for creditor protection in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court last week. Quadriga has 363,000 registered users and owes a total of C$250 million to 115,000 affected users, according to an affidavit filed by Cotten's widow Jennifer Robertson on behalf of the company. Robertson said in the affidavit that Cotten's main computer contained a "cold wallet" of cryptocurrencies, which is only accessible physically and not online, and his death left

Xbox One controllers, Alexa-powered microwaves, and more are cheaper today

If you're looking for discounts on tech, we've found a few today that may interest you. Amazon and Walmart are both selling the Xbox One controller for $37.17, which is lower than its usual sale price of around $40. If you’re in need of a new controller for your Xbox One, this is an obvious choice, but this model has a feature that might appeal to non-Xbox owners: it supports Bluetooth, so you can easily connect it with Bluetooth-capable PCs, as well as Android smartphones for some Fortnite on the go. If your PC isn't Bluetooth-ready, 8BitDo's affordable Bluetooth adapter will fix that for $19.99. Additionally, the adapter and Xbox One controller combo work seamlessly on Nintendo Switch. Time to take a sharp left turn from gaming controllers to microwaves. In case you didn’t know, Amazon makes a microwave that can cook food after you shout voice commands at your Amazon Echo â€" in fact, an Amazon Echo is required to use this gadget. It has a bunch of presets
