Facebook is testing hiding like counts - Starting in Australia

Facebook will begin testing hiding like counts, starting in Australia on September 27th, according to TechCrunch. The test will hide the number of likes on a post, only displaying that a post was liked by “[a friend] and others,” instead of displaying the actual number to the public. The limited test is a gauge of whether the feature can improve users’ sense of well-being, and if the experiment is successful, the test may roll out to more regions. “We are running a limited test where like, reaction, and video view counts are made private across Facebook. We will gather feedback to understand whether this change will improve people’s experiences,” a Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch. Facebook confirmed earlier this month that it was considering hiding like counts after mobile app researcher Jane Manchun Wong discovered the hidden feature buried in the company’s Android app. According to her findings, people will still be able to tap to see the full list of people w

Spider-Man returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sony and Disney strike a new deal

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios will make a third Spider-Man movie together after all. Sony and Disney have struck a new deal over Spider-Man, which would let the web-slinging hero return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” says Marvel Studios co-president Kevin Feige, according to Variety. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse, you never know what surprises the future might hold.” The two studios previously announced this summer that Spider-Man would leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the companies couldn’t agree on a new financing deal. Disney wanted a 50/50 cut on all revenue made via Spider-Man films, instead

Apple's new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro cameras: what they do

Apple has officially announced its latest iPhones and confirmed that, yes, there’s a huge, squircle-shaped camera bump on the back of each of these new phones. On the flagship iPhone Pro models, it contains three separate cameras, and on the iPhone 11, there are two. Each camera has its own purpose, and you’ll want to use them for different photo scenarios. IPHONE 11 12MP regular camera | 26mm f/1.8 | Optical image stabilization: The standard iPhone camera has been upgraded with a new Night mode that should be able to better compete with Night Sight on Google’s Pixel smartphones in terms of low-light performance. Apple has also improved image processing to preserve more highlights and details in each shot. 12MP ultra-wide camera | 13mm f/2.4 | 120-degree field of view: Instead of following its own tradition with a portrait lens, Apple made the somewhat surprising decision to go with an ultra-wide camera that will allow iPhone 11 owners to capture more of their surroundings

Uber announces another round of layoffs as financial uncertainty looms

Uber announced an additional round of layoffs Tuesday, this time from its product and engineering teams. A total of 435 people were let go, or around 8 percent of the ride-hailing company’s entire workforce. The news, which was first reported by TechCrunch, comes a few months after Uber said it would be cutting 400 employees from its marketing division. This latest round of layoffs comes after a brutal second quarter for Uber, with the company missing its revenue projections and reporting a record $5.2 billion net loss. In August, Uber confirmed that it had put in place a hiring freeze on new software engineers and product managers, but now â€" even as it cuts hundreds of workers â€" the company says that freeze has been lifted. “Our hope with these changes is to reset and improve how we work day to dayâ€"ruthlessly prioritizing, and always holding ourselves accountable to a high bar of performance and agility,” an Uber spokesperson said in a statement. “Whil

Audi's new concept is an all-electric off-roader with drones for headlights

Audi is not a brand you’d typically associate with off-road adventures, but that didn’t stop the automaker from kicking up some dirt with its new concept at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Audi AI:Trail (maybe it’s less of a mouthful in German?) is an all-electric, all-terrain vehicle for the future of outdoor adventures. Before we get to the specs, keep in mind this is just a concept and may not ever make its way to production. That said, Audi’s parent company, Volkswagen, claims it will actually build the electric dune buggy concept it introduced earlier this year â€" so who knows for sure? The AI:Trail is fourth in a series of autonomous concepts from Audi, preceded by the Audi AI:Con, AI:Me, and AI:Race. It’s definitely an “everything and the kitchen sink” type concept: big, chunky 22-inch wheels; a powerful battery with 400 to 500 kilometers (248.5 to 310.7 miles) of off-road range; huge, wraparound windshield; hammock-style rear seats; a phone port on th

Google's Apple Arcade competitor Play Pass is officially on the way

Earlier this year, screenshots leaked of an experimental Google Play game subscription service called Google Play Pass, which looked to be a direct answer to Apple’s similar Apple Arcade. But it doesn’t seem to be a test anymore â€" Google has now teased that Play Pass is officially “coming soon.” The teaser, a day before Apple revealed pricing and launch details for Apple Arcade, has zero details â€" so we’ll have to keep waiting to learn more about when the service is coming, how much it will cost, and which games will be available. But we do have those early leaked screenshots, first reported on by Android Police in July, to suggest that it may cost $4.99 per month â€" exactly the same price as Apple Arcade â€" and appears to have a similar model to Apple Arcade in giving subscribers an ad-free, play-what-you-want experience. The screenshots also showed that the service might have some well-known games, including Monument Valley, Stardew Valley an

Apple Watch Studio lets you make the Apple Watch of your dreams

Today, coinciding with the announcement of the Apple Watch Series 5, Apple has launched Apple Watch Studio, a way to mix and match Watch casings and Watch straps to order the exact Apple Watch Series 5 that you want. It’s available right now on Apple’s website and in the Apple Store App, and will be coming to Apple’s retail stores in the future. Previously, Apple only let you customize your Watch by picking from Apple-selected sets of casings and straps, and by buying individual straps to add afterwards. Apple did offer a lot of different casing/strap combos, but if you wanted, say, the stainless steel watch with a link bracelet, you would have had to buy them separately. With Apple Watch Studio, you don’t have to buy anything extra. After making your selections, you click or tap the “I’m done” button on your screen, and then you’ll be able to confirm your case size, pick if you want a model with cellular connectivity, and check out. And if you don’t want to use A

The 5 biggest announcements from Apple's September 2019 event

Apple’s big hardware event for 2019 has wrapped, and, as expected, it brought a bounty of exciting announcements.
