iRobot acquired education-focused company Root Robotics

iRobot is best known for its robots used in the home, and now it’s looking to enter the classroom with a new acquisition. The company has announced that it has acquired Root Robotics, which sells a robot and platform that helps children learn how to code.

Root Robotics originated as a research project at Harvard University a couple of years ago, and its Robot already looks considerably like a Roomba â€" it’s a small, circular device that uses two wheels to drive around on a flat surface. It’s accompanied by an app that teaches children how to program the robot to do a variety of tasks, like drawing (the robot has a hold to place a marker in), creating music or games, and more.

iRobot says that the acquisition will help it “diversify its educational robot product offerings, further demonstrating its commitment to make robotic technology more accessible to educators, students and parents.” In doing so, it’s joining the space occupied by other similar companies, like Wonder Workshop, which manufactures Dash and Dot, and Learning Resource’s Botley, all of which teach coding and programming through their own apps.

Presumably, as Root allows iRobot to enter the education marketplace, it’ll be able to utilize its existing platforms for future products. Root Robot is now for sale on iRobot’s website, and retails for $199 for an individual robot, while a 30-pack for classrooms goes for just under $6,000. The company also sells an academic app ($60), and a whiteboard surface ($30) for it to operate on.

Millions in cryptocurrencies frozen after Canadian founder's death

TORONTO (Reuters) - About C$180 million ($137.21 million) in cryptocurrencies have been frozen in the user accounts of Canadian digital platform Quadriga after the founder, the only person with the password to gain access, died suddenly in December. Gerald Cotten died aged 30 from complications with Crohn's disease while volunteering at an orphanage in India, according to the Facebook page of Quadriga CX, which announced his death on January 14. The platform, which allows the trading of Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum, filed for creditor protection in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court last week. Quadriga has 363,000 registered users and owes a total of C$250 million to 115,000 affected users, according to an affidavit filed by Cotten's widow Jennifer Robertson on behalf of the company. Apple reportedly testing new iPhones with three rear cameras and a USB-C port

Apple is planning to release an iPhone that has three rear cameras in 2019, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The company's current top-of-the-line iPhones, the XS, and XS Max, have two cameras on the back, one being a portrait lens. But Android phone makers including LG and Huawei have already released triple-camera systems that allow for more creative flexibility and ultra-wide-angle shots. Apple is set to join them with the successor to the XS Max, according to Gurman, with the newest camera capturing a wider field of view. The third rear camera will also "capture more pixels so Apple software could, for example, automatically repair a video or photo to fit in a subject that may have been accidentally cut off from the initial shot." Additionally, Apple’s Live Photos feature will be extended from three seconds to six seconds.
