Russia military 2019 calendar showing armed female soldiers

A chilling Christmas greeting to the West has come from Vladimir Putin today in the form of a 2019 calendar from his burgeoning military machine.

The Russian Defence Ministry view of next year begins with a snowy January view of a hulking Topol-M intercontinental mobile missile system captioned cheerfully: “Cargo delivery to anywhere in the world.”


Another icy calendar greeting comes in September with a picture showing a uniformed female sniper taking aim to shoot.

“Some women can blow your head away,” reads the caption.

The calendar was unveiled in apparent deliberate timing as the West marks Christmas Day.

For Russians 25 December is a normal working day and their main seasonal celebration comes at New Year, the moment when Grandfather Frost - as Santa is known here - brings presents to all children.

This kicks off a long Russian holiday season which includes Orthodox Russian Christmas Day on 7 January.

The March 2009 calendar shows the increasing number of women cadets joining Putin’s military ranks.

The message is: “Shooting a glance is the Kremlin's secret weapon.”

In February the picture is the Tu-95 strategic bomber, nicknamed the ‘bear’.

Here the message from defence minister Sergei Shoigu, a close ally and holiday buddy of Vladimir Putin, is: "Russian 'bears' don't hibernate in winter.”

April shows “Russian snowdrops” - aka Russian special forces equipped with chemical attack masks.

More special forces are seen in June examining their weapons, with the caption: “Tuning equipment before a ‘concert’.”

Millions in cryptocurrencies frozen after Canadian founder's death

TORONTO (Reuters) - About C$180 million ($137.21 million) in cryptocurrencies have been frozen in the user accounts of Canadian digital platform Quadriga after the founder, the only person with the password to gain access, died suddenly in December. Gerald Cotten died aged 30 from complications with Crohn's disease while volunteering at an orphanage in India, according to the Facebook page of Quadriga CX, which announced his death on January 14. The platform, which allows the trading of Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum, filed for creditor protection in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court last week. Quadriga has 363,000 registered users and owes a total of C$250 million to 115,000 affected users, according to an affidavit filed by Cotten's widow Jennifer Robertson on behalf of the company. Instagram is testing a donation sticker in Stories

Instagram is experimenting with a potential donation sticker for its Stories feature, as spotted by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong. The feature seems similar to what Facebook offers with its fundraising and donation tools for charity or personal reasons. Based on Wong's screenshot, it looks like users will be able to search through a list of nonprofits to link directly to the sticker. Facebook has had fundraising tools since 2015, but it only recently dropped fees associated with those donations. It also offers other payment processing tools for Marketplace and Messenger. Over the past few years, Instagram has been experimenting with what payments would look like on the platform, but it has so far only released test features to allow select users to book spa appointments and restaurant reservations.
