Miss Universe winner is Catriona Gray from Philippines

Was it the “lava walk” that helped crown Catriona Gray of the Philippines as the new Miss Universe?

Just one day before Sunday’s final competition in Bangkok, Thailand, Gray won praise from model Tyra Banks, who described a video of Gray’s runway walk during a preliminary competition as “Pinoy Power to the Max!!!”

On Sunday, Gray, 24, bested contestants from 93 other countries to capture the Miss Universe crown.

The first runner-up was Tamaryn Green of South Africa and the third-place finisher was Sthefany Gutierrez of Venezuela.

Gray succeeds last year’s winner, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa.

The theme of the 67th Miss Universe pageant was "Empowered Women" and was judged by seven women including former pageant winners, businesswomen, and a fashion designer.

The emcee for Sunday evening’s festivities was comedian and game show host Steve Harvey.

According to website PhilStar Global, the evening contained a moment of humor when contestant Miss Costa Rica referred to an infamous Harvey faux pas from the 2015 Miss Universe pageant â€" when he announced the wrong contestant as having won that year’s title.

On Sunday, Harvey asked Miss Costa Rica â€" herself a TV host like Harvey â€" whether she had any professional advice for him.

She responded: “If they ever give you, like, a really, really, really important envelope, try to read carefully, OK?”

After the audience laughed, Harvey directed a remark at the crowd.

“You all thought that was funny,” he said. “You all just won’t let it go.”

Millions in cryptocurrencies frozen after Canadian founder's death

TORONTO (Reuters) - About C$180 million ($137.21 million) in cryptocurrencies have been frozen in the user accounts of Canadian digital platform Quadriga after the founder, the only person with the password to gain access, died suddenly in December. Gerald Cotten died aged 30 from complications with Crohn's disease while volunteering at an orphanage in India, according to the Facebook page of Quadriga CX, which announced his death on January 14. The platform, which allows the trading of Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum, filed for creditor protection in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court last week. Quadriga has 363,000 registered users and owes a total of C$250 million to 115,000 affected users, according to an affidavit filed by Cotten's widow Jennifer Robertson on behalf of the company. Instagram is testing a donation sticker in Stories

Instagram is experimenting with a potential donation sticker for its Stories feature, as spotted by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong. The feature seems similar to what Facebook offers with its fundraising and donation tools for charity or personal reasons. Based on Wong's screenshot, it looks like users will be able to search through a list of nonprofits to link directly to the sticker. Facebook has had fundraising tools since 2015, but it only recently dropped fees associated with those donations. It also offers other payment processing tools for Marketplace and Messenger. Over the past few years, Instagram has been experimenting with what payments would look like on the platform, but it has so far only released test features to allow select users to book spa appointments and restaurant reservations.
